The old courtyard once formed the boundary between the main house and the farm. The barns housed the wine press and storage, now part of the adjacent house. As a result of its ancient usage the yard has very shallow soil full of stones which needed a lot of improvement to create a garden. We used what soil there was and added compost and manure with a good mulch after planting. It is sheltered, extremely hot & dry in the summer but can be waterlogged with rain from the roofs in winter. In creating these gardens I had great help from lots of friends including Richard Jackson who did the original survey and David Purkiss who with his tremendous knowledge of plants still helps me today. The slide show below shows the day we arrived and the various stages over the years and how it became a garden.
