14. Orchard & Topiary Walk

By 2010 the yew hedges round the Lily pond had matured into splendid 3 metre high walls, it was time to tackle the old apple orchard beyond. What was left of the orchard was pruned and new full standard apples planted in the same lines as the old. The trees included 2 Bramley and several eating apples.
Down the side of the Orchard I created a topiary walk with a little pavilion at the end. I started with yew hedges to match the one on the right. I planted that hedge some years earlier mixed with weeping catoneaster to provide lovely red berries in the winter. Box was the favourite choice but since box blite and those ravenous moths, I have started planting other things all to be cut into shapes as they grow.
