One of the first tasks after arriving was to sort out the entrance garden. There was only a meagre gravel drive and a grassy mound in front of the main door Picture 2. It seemed right to create a parterre being a thing that the French do so well and the English love. We had fun and games deciding the orientation and size of the main bed. There were so many factors to consider:  the gate, the front door and how it would lead onto the courtyard. Nothing was square or regular. Now one would hardly notice the odd angles or sizes and it all flows nicely. Picture 5 shows the gatekeepers cottage just one of the many factors to consider at one end of the new bed.
