These types of areas have become popular in recent years and while they need little maintenance in the year they do have to be carefully managed. We are fortunate that wild orchids grow here as well as naturalised asters. Other plants include Bugloss Migonette and cockscomb. The grass tends to swamp the area to the exclusion of other plants so has to be retarded in winter. Mowing is once a year in autumn with a scythe, the seed heads are left on the ground for a couple of weeks to allow the seeds to fall, then collected.  It is important that the soil is kept impoverished.
